Jambo Badges

Well I thought I had  a photo of the actual badges but apparently thats on my PC at work so here is the artwork they are made from.  The bit up for sale is the blue bordered part.

Target Setting

I was thinking about the upcoming Aberystwyth Adventure and how I should maybe set myself a target amount to raise doing it. Well I thought at first maybe I should set my target at £1800 which is what it costs for somebody to attend the Jamboree next year. That may be setting my sights a bit high so I’ve decided to set my target at £500

£500 is roughly 28% of the cost of sending someone to the Jamboree.

If you want to sponser me you can either fill in the form I’m carrying with me or use the handy button below (uses Just Giving)

The Aberystwyth Adventure

At each Jamboree Unit meeting I’m always surprised at the amount of money the youngsters bring in from various sponsored activities.  So I order to demonstrate that I’m just as up to the challenge as they are and to push the unit forward towards it’s target I’d like to announce a little sponsored activity of my own.

The Aberystwyth Adventure

At 9PM on Saturday the 28 August I’m going to start pedalling from the Council House here in Birmingham and I’m going to cycle through the night to Aberystwyth Pier.  My google maps calculations make it to be just over 110 miles and involves cycling over the Cambrian Mountains, and I’m going to do it on a folding bike … Unsupported!

People who know me from old will realise that I’m not the strapping 18 year old I once was and part of the challenge is to loose enough weight and build up enough fitness so that I don’t die somewhere in North Wales.  So there’s a lot to do, I’ve got to stop dawdling on my commutes and stop eating pie.  The Brompton will need some fettling to make sure I don’t end up having a cataclysmic failure on the way and I may have to buy some more suitable long distance cycling clothing, jeans and a polo shirt might not cut it.

How can you help I here you cry …

Well to be blunt, you can give me your money.  I’ll have sponsor forms with me pretty much all the way up to departure and probably with me when I cycle to Aberystwyth.  You could also come and see me off, or for the brave and adventurous you could meet me in Aberystwyth and cheer me over the finish line … and then make sure I don’t collapse in a heap on the promenade.

If you don’t think you’ll see me before the event and still want to support me, or would rather use your credit card you can use the handy link below (uses Just Giving).

Unit Badges

I ordered custom badges for the first time today, If it sounds geeky well i’m afraid it is.

In fact what I actually did was order 2000 fundraising badges for the Jamboree Unit and 500 unit only badges. The badges are being produced by a local firm called Tolley Badges from a design by the very talented Chris Murray.

I bet your wondering why I haven’t posted an image, it’s because I’m making you wait till I have them in my hands.

Unit Leaders Weekend

This weekend I attended the first unit leaders weekend with my unit leader Stephen and Keith & Graham from the Birmingham / BSWE unit.  The venue was the very plushly appointed Barcello Hinckley Island Hotel, where after checking in I discovered that my accomodation was in an executive room although I suspect that all the rooms where executive rooms …

and yes my name was spelt wrong on my room booking and name tag.

First up we got to meet the members of the contingent management team and the contingent support team.  We had a presentation from two young spokespersons who had attended the 2007 Jamboree.  They where just brimming with useful tips on how to engage with the youngsters who will be making up our units.

Fika

We will be actively encouraged to participate in Fika …

Now calm down and put the yellow cards away, Fika is the Swedish term for coffee and cake with friends.  It’s Swedish for tea break one of my favorite hobbys.  I look forward to coffee and cake at unit meetings, leaders meetings and every possible ocasion.  I intend to devote my fullest attention to Fika.

Workshops

We took part in a number of workshops during the weekend

  • Preparing for the WSJ
  • Culture
  • Fundraising
  • Unit Leadership
  • Selection of Young People

We now have a resonable idea of what we could expect to encounter at the Jamboree and how we are likely to get there.  We know we are flying to Copenhagen where we will be staying for a few days before the Jamboree and then travelling by coach and overnight ferry to our home hospitality then flying back to the UK a few days later.

Oh and we got issued our unit leaders handbooks.
